4000 Years: Queering Redcar’s History
Researcher
This website is the outcome of a body of research undertaken for Redcar Palace. I was asked to consider our LGBT+, Northern and Working-Class identities; drawing from and highlighting the intersectional narratives on the coast and in Redcar which is full of queer potential.

It is split into 5 sub sections that aim to (re)contextualise the landscape and historical narratives through a queer lens. These sections are;

  1. A General Introduction into the Growth of the British Seaside in the 20th Century
  2. A Queer Beach and Northern Attitudes to Homosexuality in the early 20th Century
  3. Gender Expression in People's Palaces and Music Halls
  4. Camp and Queering the Pierrots
  5. Queer Liberation and Politics
